With Greater Victoria’s growing and aging population, the visits to the Emergency Departments of Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals have increased 13% over the last five years.
Combined, Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals serve over 320 patients per day, resulting in more than 120,000 visits per year. Because of the wide range of possible illness and injury, and the potentially life-threatening nature of every case, these units must be adequately equipped to provide initial treatment to every patient, 24 hours a day. Your donation helps fund this vital equipment to speed up response times and save lives.
Whether faced with shortness of breath, neurological symptoms, signs of heart attack or stroke, extreme pain or severe trauma, patients coming to our Emergency Departments need quality care as quickly as possible. Every moment counts.
Anyone, Anytime Can Get Hurt
Any person could find themselves in need of our Emergency Departments, at any moment, for any reason.
Let’s say you’ve hurt yourself and you don’t know what’s wrong. What you do know is that the pain is slowly getting worse, and you decide to go to the hospital.
You arrive at the Emergency Department, and you’re immediately assessed by a triage nurse who determines if you require critical, acute, or ambulatory care.
For instance, if you require critical care for a suspected heart attack, you might be admitted directly to cardiac care. However, if you have a non-life threatening injury, you may be referred to acute care and placed in a bed for an ultrasound or bloodwork. If you can comfortably sit up, you may be deemed well enough to wait in the ambulatory area for further diagnosis from a doctor or nurse.
All of the above scenarios are examples of how diverse and comprehensive the care in our Emergency Department is.
Help Us Improve Response Times by Investing in Vital Equipment
With your donation to emergency & trauma care, we can invest in vital equipment that supports our emergency team as they continue to deliver the best possible care.
“That July, my life could have ended in a heartbeat. If I hadn’t received the care I needed the moment I needed it, I most likely wouldn’t be here to write this letter to you. That’s what I think about now — how grateful I am that we have this state-of-the-art, healing hospital and a Foundation that supports our doctors and nurses in doing their finest work.”
