REDEFINING THE LANDSCAPE OF SURGERY ON VANCOUVER ISLAND
Together, we will write the future of healthcare by bringing brand-new minimally-invasive surgical procedures to the Island through robotics and best-in-class equipment across various surgical specialties.

Equipment Highlight: da Vinci Surgical Robotics System
Robotics have revolutionized the field of minimally invasive surgery, offering numerous advantages over traditional surgery. With the da Vinci Surgical Robotics System, our care teams will be able to treat more patients in less time, offering better outcomes including:
-
Enhanced precision and visualization for surgeons
-
Reduced pain and risk of complications for patients
-
Reduced recovery times and care staff requirements
Surgical robotics is currently in use in most large centres in Canada; however, Victoria will be one of the first smaller community centres to have access to this technology. The time is now.

YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED. THE TIME IS NOW.
Our hospitals are home to top surgeons and leading-edge procedures. Across all surgical specialties, our surgeons are constantly striving to optimize the care they provide for their patients.

General Surgery
Thanks to the drive of our general surgeons, we were one of the first centres in western Canada to offer minimally invasive colorectal surgery, and one of only two centres in BC offering multi- surgical specialty team pelvic surgery for complex pelvic malignancies. Our hospitals are some of the highest volume centres in the province for the treatment of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, liver and gallbladder cancers, and pancreatic cancers. It’s Time for Surgical Innovation will fund a new intraoperative ultrasound system that will allow surgeons to more accurately locate and remove tumours not visible to the naked eye, increasing the ability to eliminate cancers completely, while better protecting critical structures and minimizing damage to normal tissue.
Gynecology
The field of gynecology was the first to specialize in minimally invasive surgery. At VGH, our program has grown from five gynecologists to 17, with many subspecialists meaning all gynecology patients can receive care on the Island, rather than having to travel to the Mainland. This campaign will fund three new state-of-the-art surgical towers, which allow for 3D visualization, and special lighting modes, including fluorescence, which supports cancer care.
Ophthalmology
It’s Time for Surgical Innovation is bringing leading-edge advancements to our Ophthamology department including new microscopes with 3D visualization and scanning abilities, and a brand new ophtalmic microsurgery system which provides minimized tissue trauma and optimized recovery times for patients thanks to its high definition visualization and laser precision.
Otolaryngology (ENT)
Our ENT (ear, nose, throat) surgeons are excited at the prospect of surgical robotics. This technology will enable new-to-the-Island minimally invasive procedures that previously required cutting into the jaw, leaving patients with permanent scarring, and difficulties in eating, speaking and swallowing. Robotic surgery will also allow our ENT surgeons to remove tumours from otherwise inaccessible anatomical spaces with minimal scarring.
Urology
Our urologists have been at the forefront of advocating for surgical robotics. 3,500 urology procedures take place in our hospitals every year, and robotics is the top choice for many of these surgeries, like radical proctectomies (removal of the prostate). Prostate surgery using robotics results in 28% less blood transfusions, 23% fewer readmissions, enhanced suturing incisions, and lower demand for post-op care.
