The variety of equipment necessary to support and monitor patients in critical
condition makes intensive care one of the most technologically advanced and
resource-demanding areas of the hospital.
Every year, more than 1,200 people require intensive care at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals for acute or life-threatening conditions such as organ failure or major trauma.
Our intensive care patients are some of the most vulnerable. Critically ill or severely injured, they require one-to-one medical attention and continuous monitoring. The broad variety of equipment needed to support these patients makes intensive care one of our hospitals’ most technologically demanding areas. Your donation helps these patients get the advanced care they need to recover faster.
Patients in the Intensive Care Unit are fighting for their lives. They can be stable one minute and in medical distress the next. When time is of the essence, better equipment means better chances of survival.
Our trauma centres provide the highest level of care
If you have a traumatic accident, you will likely end up at Royal Jubilee or Victoria General hospitals, Vancouver Island’s two intensive care referral centres. Victoria General, as the only Level 3 trauma centre in the region, provides the highest level of care, from resuscitation to rehabilitation.
Our hospitals’ intensive care teams are recognized for their agility, dedication, and expertise. 10 specially trained physicians and numerous nurses, therapists, and pharmacists use sophisticated equipment to provide rapid information and aid with life-saving decisions. When emergencies arise, each team member remains calm, respectful, and efficient, culminating in the best possible outcome for you, the patient.
Every 60 seconds, survival rates decrease 10% for someone in cardiac arrest
Through rapid, first-rate care our intensive care teams tirelessly strive to optimize your likelihood of survival. As a trauma patient, you’re at a much higher risk of going into cardiac arrest. That’s why state-of-the-art equipment must be available in the Intensive Care Unit at all times.
Help us save lives with state-of-the-art equipment
With your donation to critical care, we can invest in vital equipment that supports our teams as they continue to deliver the best possible care.
