More than 2,600 cancer patients receive inpatient oncology care at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals each year, 30% of whom come from outside Greater Victoria.
Our experts treat cancer patients with a combination of surgery, medication, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy, with the goal of increasing chances of remission, and to extend and improve quality of life. Your support funds the purchase of advanced equipment to help ensure every patient receives a timely and accurate diagnosis.
Nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. With the right equipment we can quickly diagnose the disease and dramatically improve the chances of full recovery.
Our hospitals rank among the world’s best for cancer outcomes
Odds are that you know or will know someone dealing with cancer. We can take comfort in knowing that Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals, which are Vancouver Island’s specialty oncology hospitals, offer some of the world’s best treatment. Royal Jubilee hosts the region’s radiotherapy and radio immunotherapy units, as well as one of BC Cancer Agency’s six full-service cancer centres. Victoria General houses the Island’s Breast Health Centre, to screen and diagnose breast cancer. It is also responsible for most child oncology treatments on Vancouver Island.
Our team is involved in every aspect of cancer care, from prevention and diagnosis, to consultation, therapy, and rehabilitation. As a patient, you can feel confident that our integrated approach—involving oncologists, nurses, therapists, pathologists, pharmacists, dieticians, and counsellors—will deliver the best care possible. Our expertise and experience, paired with the latest in cancer care equipment, is why BC ranks near the top globally for cancer outcomes.
Equipment and innovation have brought huge leaps in cancer care
Over the last decade, advanced equipment and innovation have enabled our cancer care team to improve early detection, administer the latest treatment, respond to emergencies, and manage medication side effects. For example, Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Patient Care Centre has three lead-lined rooms for radio immunotherapy—a new chemotherapy targeting specific sites in the body at a molecular level.
“Thankfully, test results found that the tumour was a very low grade cancer, meaning the cells could have spread had it not been found early on. For that, I thank my son Weston ― whom I now call my miracle baby ― and the many caregivers at Victoria General Hospital who treated me and helped me on this journey. Today, I am in full remission and getting ready to celebrate Weston’s first steps.”
Working with BC Cancer Agency
Our team works in the diagnosis and intervention of a cancer patient’s healthcare journey. From sophisticated medical imagining, laboratory work, surgeries, and reconstructions, to when a patient is too sick to be at home and requires to stay in hospital, the team at Royal Jubilee Hospital is dedicated to exemplary cancer care.
BC Cancer Agency hosts a RN Clinic where they can start an IV, give medications, and drain fluid from lungs and tummies. When patients are not stable to go to home at the end of their BC Cancer Agency visit, they will often be a direct admission to Royal Jubilee Hospital. This helps to keep some cancer patients from having to go to the emergency department as a result of their vulnerability or a rapid change in condition. When someone is receiving treatment at BC Cancer Agency, and they need to come to the hospital, they often will be seen by the same doctor. This is a huge benefit: the physicians are on the unit in Royal Jubilee Hospital in the morning, and then following up with outpatients across the street at BC Cancer Agency the rest of the day. It results in a strong continuity of care.
