Caring Spirit: VGH Intensive Care Unit
Congratulations to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Victoria General Hospital on receiving a Caring Spirit award! The grateful husband of a patient in their care wanted to honour ICU staff for the amazing care they gave his wife.
Intensive Care teams at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals treat some of the most vulnerable patients in the hospital: critically ill or severely injured patients who need one-to-one medical attention and continuous monitoring, twenty-four hours a day. Patients may need Intensive Care because of a failure of their heart, lungs or kidneys, or they could have experienced a major trauma. They may also have been admitted to Intensive Care during the crucial hours right after major surgery when they are at risk of complications. They often require breathing support and may need resuscitation or other vital life support measures right at their bedside. Intensive Care teams respond quickly to emergency medical situations in the ICU and throughout our hospitals. Without rapid and appropriate treatment, many of these patients would not survive. For instance, for every one-minute delay in defibrillation, the survival rate of a patient in cardiac arrest decreases by 7% to 10%. The variety of equipment necessary to support and monitor patients in critical condition makes Intensive Care one of the most technologically advanced and resource-demanding areas of the hospital. Because of the medical equipment available today, our doctors and nurses are able to save lives they may not have been able to save just a few years ago.
The Victoria Hospitals Foundation would like to thank the donor for his generous gift, and to congratulate the staff of the ICU at Victoria General on the well-deserved honour! Service like theirs makes a real difference in patients’ lives. Please share widely. We want the entire community to hear about the incredible impact our staff have at Victoria General hospital.
