Life-Changing Care Starts With A Diagnosis
The majority of patients at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals will interact with laboratory medicine, medical imaging, and pharmacy services. Rapid and accurate medical assessments are critical for a patient’s chances of recovery and quality of life.
“As a care provider and a patient, I believe imaging is as close to a crystal ball as we’ll ever have in medicine.”
— Dr. Hayley Bos, Grateful Patient and Medical Director of Maternity
Diagnostics drive more than 60% of all medical decisions
Multidisciplinary teams in the Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals’ integrated diagnostic services are key to early detection and fast, accurate diagnosis. They find answers and give informed treatment direction for any and all health concerns you may have.
- Laboratory medicine encompasses blood work, medical genetics, specimen collection, and transfusion medicine. Every year, over 5.2 million laboratory tests are performed at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals.
- Medical imaging allows radiologists and other physicians to go beneath the surface and quickly assess what is happening inside the body. High-definition images are collected through different diagnostic scans—including CT, MRI, angiography, X-ray, and ultrasound. More than 285,000 medical imaging procedures are performed at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals annually. More than half of all healthcare encounters require medical imaging.
- Pharmacy is fully integrated into the care journey of our patients. Our hospitals’ dedicated team of pharmacists, clinicians, and assistants work to streamline treatment and provide patients with education about medication side-effects and how best to manage them.

Your support means our medical professionals can make informed decisions faster
Equipment makes a difference
Every year, technology improves, yielding faster and better diagnostic capability, resulting in greater insight into patient conditions.
In 2023, Foundation donors raised $2.1 million to replace Royal Jubilee Hospital’s chemistry line — the most used piece of equipment in Island Health — which plays a key role in the analysis of blood samples. The new automated system can process as many samples per hour as the old chemistry line could process per day. It now performs over 3 million tests per year, providing vital information for patients in our Victoria Hospitals, and across Island Health.
You can save and change patients’ lives by equipping our care teams with the best equipment.

This Technology Saves Lives, Like Mine
“I often marvel at how MRI has transformed medicine, and how it has better equipped my colleagues and me to help our patients. Now, I simply cannot imagine medicine without it. Of course, I never expected to experience first-hand just how life-saving this imaging equipment is.
