Fall Campaign Update – Allisha’s Story
Our community’s response to fully equip the Patient Care Centre at Royal Jubilee Hospital has been so generous! With business leader Mr. Jim Pattison matching every gift, we are well on our way to our goal. Thank you to every one of our donors. To those who are thinking of donating, we do still need your help!
Here’s one story from 24-year-old patient Allisha Moniz:
For three weeks last January I stayed on the 7th floor of the Patient Care Centre after a 10 hour surgery in which my lower left jaw was removed and reconstructed from my fibula. After surgery I couldn’t breathe, eat, speak, or walk on my own, which made how my room was equipped very important to me and my family.
Thankfully I was staying at the Patient Care Centre. I had my own room, which was quiet and comforting. My mother and sisters were able to stay overnight on a sleeper couch, which meant that I would not have to stay alone. The privacy of having my own room made it very accessible to have my friends, family and support network come and visit. It was reassuring to know I was being monitored 24 hours a day by a state-of-the-art vital signs monitor that would alert my doctors and nurses immediately if something went wrong. And because of equipment like Smart Beds and Vocera communication devices, I could open the blinds to let in the natural sunlight, turn off the lights to sleep, or let my nurse know when I needed help, all from the comfort of my bed.
I could not be more pleased to tell you that because of the care I received, I am now home and back to my work with preschoolers at my church and school.
