Dr. Malik shares his unique perspective as a General Surgeon at Victoria General and Royal Jubilee hospitals.
Victoria Hospitals Foundation: What is your role within our hospitals?
Dr. Malik: I work at both Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital as a general surgeon. I specialize in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery.
VHF: Why did you decide to become a surgeon?
DM: I enjoy providing surgical solutions for common disease involving the abdomen. My patients are the main reason why I do what I do—they see the direct benefits from minimally invasive surgery. It is an absolute honour to be a part of the hospital team which includes nurses and anesthetists. We all work together to help care for our patient population.
VHF: What is your favourite part of your job?
DM: My favourite part of my job is visiting with patients after surgery. Patients are the real reason for why we are blessed to do what we do.
VHF: Who or what inspires you to care for others?
My mentors inspire me every day. They have provided outstanding surgical care and rapport with their patients. They inspire me to continue to improve patient care.
VHF: What does “Hospital Hero” mean to you?
DM: “Hospital Hero” is an absolute honour. This is really a testament to our team of health care professionals who work together to relieve patients of their sickness and disease.
VHF: The past year and a half has been challenging for all. Have these challenges motivated you in any way?
DM: This last year was challenging indeed. This past year allowed us the time to rethink, reboot, and transform how we carry out our lives in every aspect: personally and professionally. It has made us acknowledge that we can do and be better in all aspects.
VHF: What would you say to current VHF donors and people who are thinking about giving in the future?
DM: I would take this opportunity to thank VHF donors for their contributions to delivering improved patient care. Future contributions allow us to enhance our delivery of health care services and use innovative technology to advance modern medical science.
