Jinjoo shares her unique perspective as a rehabilitation assistant at Victoria General Hospital.
Victoria Hospitals Foundation: What is your role within our hospitals?
Jinjoo: I work at Victoria General Hospital as a rehabilitation assistant. I work with physiotherapists and occupational therapists to support the rehab therapy team.
VHF: Why did you decide to become a rehabilitation assistant?
J: I like to help people get better—it always makes me feel good. I chose healthcare as a career path because every day I can make a difference in people’s lives.
VHF: What is your favourite part of your job?
J: I am truly happy when I see my patients improve enough to be able to go back to their homes safely and independently.
VHF: Who or what inspires you to care for others?
J: I learned so much by observing and helping the Victoria General Hospital therapy team. They have taught me how to treat patients safely and with respect. They have taught me what patient-centred care is—they inspire me every day.
VHF: What does “Hospital Hero” mean to you?
J: I think all hospital staff are heroes no matter their role, especially those who worked during COVID-19.
VHF: The past year and a half has been challenging for all of us. Have these challenges motivated you in any way?
J: In the beginning of the pandemic it was difficult to see COVID-19 case numbers increasing no matter what we did or the protocols that were in place. It is good to see some improvement recently. We all have to make sure we are all safe, especially for those working or as patients in the hospital or nursing home. When we see people doing their part, it gives us confidence that we can overcome any obstacle.
VHF: What would you say to current VHF donors and people who are thinking about giving in the future?
J: I appreciate your help and support. It is important to have enough funds to provide good, quality care. It will make hospital staff’s hard work more valuable.
